If you've reached age 70½, and you're philanthropically inclined, you can make cash donations to IRS-approved charities out of your IRA. Non-traditional investments held in IRAs should be handled with care. First you must set up a self-directed account with a custodian or trustee. Then you must carefully arrange for money to be withdrawn from the account to buy the investments. If you err in this procedure, and have control of the funds, the IRS can treat the withdrawal as a taxable distribution. This article discusses two U.S. Tax Court cases with very different outcomes.
